2. The Inn At Whitewell, Lancashire
It is almost impossible to imagine a day when a better inn will grace the English landscape. Everything here is perfect. The inn sits just above the river Hodder, a favourite for dog walkers, and doors from the bar lead onto a terrace where guests can enjoy five-mile views across parkland to rising fells. Except for the main dining room, all areas of the inn are dog-friendly.

3. Watergate Bay Hotel, Cornwall
Watergate Bay sits directly above the two-mile-long beach of the same name, one of the best in the UK. It's all about the views here, through walls of glass in the huge café, or from the 25-metre infinity pool and a terrace strewn with loungers. Walk the spectacular coast path for miles in either direction or set up camp on the beach and watch the sun set directly into the sea.

4. The Cholmondelely Arms, Cheshire
A light-flooded former schoolhouse with supremely comfortable bedrooms and a brilliant bar downstairs. On the bar, you'll find a jar of homemade biscuits for four-legged friends to enjoy and behind it 'dog bottle beer', a meat-based stock drink that dogs love. Poo bags are free to take whenever necessary, as are dog dinner bowls, so you only have to pack light for your visit.

5. Brownber Hall, Cumbria
This Victorian country house is bright, relaxed, and sociable. There's an honesty bar, plenty of space to chill and deeply comfortable beds. The Coast to Coast and Dales High Way run right past the door, but for something shorter, the route from Smardale Gill Nature Reserve to the viaduct is a real hidden treasure, threading down a secluded valley.
