Top 10 Shows To Watch This Autumn
The best cosy, scary and binge-worthy TV perfect for the autumn nights
Somehow we have found ourselves staring autumn right in its golden brown eyes. One minute we were enjoying al fresco dinners in the late night summer sun, sipping on an Aperol spritz. And now we are reaching for our comfy slippers and hand-warming pumpkin-spiced latte whilst we endlessly scroll through Netflix.
Scroll no more! We have curated a list of TV shows and movies that capture the autumnal spirit and get you in the mood for a cosy evening on the couch. From classic films to nostalgic TV shows to even some new releases, we have the perfect list to keep you entertained until Christmas.
1. Gilmore Girls
Okay, this is an obvious one that's on every autumn watch list like this. But there's a reason why... It's honestly amazing! Mainly down to the wholesome storyline that follows mother and daughter Lorelei and Rory Gilmore in their cute, cosy town of Stars Hollow and its seemingly forever autumn setting. Orange leaves, warm feelings and a constant supply of coffee can you want anything more? Just trust us if you have never watched it stop everything you're doing right now and head over to Netflix! And if it's already one of your faves then take this as a sign to go watch it again, you will thank us.
2. The Great British Bake Off
If there is ever a bigger indication of autumn officially incoming it's the return of the much-loved Great British Bake Off on Channel 4. Other than the natural drama of a competitive baking show (we all remember the baked Alaska incident of 2014) it's full of tasty treats, memorable characters and an array of wonderful jumpers from Noel Fielding. The perfect way to snuggle down on a Tuesday night with biscuits at your dunking disposal.
3. Hocus Pocus 2
A new one to the list but one that's very familiar I'm sure. That's right unless you have been living under a rock you will know that the 90's cult classic Hocus Pocus is back for round two on Disney+. Featuring (our secretly favourite) trio of witches the Sanderson Sisters in a modern-day Salem back to wreak some havoc. If it's anything like the first film we are in for a treat.
4. What We Do In the Shadows
Think mockumentary but with vampire roommates in Staten Island and you have What We Do In The Shadows. Available on iPlayer, this hilarious dark comedy, written by Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi, follows three traditional vampires and one energy vampire finding their way through the modern world. Including a brilliant cast, this spooky comedy is a must-watch for autumn. If the series isn't enough you even have the original 2014 film.
5. Harry Potter
As the nights get dark and we descend into the run-up to Christmas, it just couldn't be a better time to watch the Harry Potter films. Filled with magic and wonder this series of films will bring back all the exciting nostalgia we remember from the books. Immerse yourself into the world of butterbeer and chocolate frogs, (I mean there's obviously more to it but it's deffo a film series you need snacks for).
6. Dawsons Creek
A wholesome teen drama, full of pure, unadulterated nostalgia, the recipe for the perfect autumn watch. With a brilliant soundtrack to match this is the one to throw you right back into the after-school nights of the 90s. Based in the idyllic town of Capeside, it follows a group of four friends and their journey through friendships, romantic relationships and the angsty problems plaguing teen life. A 90s teen drama in all its cringy-glory!
7. Wednesday Addams
Another newbie to the list, that we have high hopes for, is Tim Burton's Wednesday Addams coming to Netflix. Based upon the much-loved character of the same name from the ICONIC Addams family. This is likely to bring back all that creepy goodness we know and love from the films. It focuses on a young Wednesday through school trying to master her abilities and solve mysteries. With familiar faces due to pop up, this has the potential to be the nostalgic win of 2022.
8. Ghosts
The plot may sound creepier than it actually is, but Ghosts is actually a brilliant British sitcom featuring many recognisable faces. Following a young couple who inherit an old country mansion, that happens to be haunted by a collection of needy ghosts. The events that unfold are full of wit, dark humour and sentimental moments. I promise you just won't regret delving deep into this heartwarming series.
9. Beetlejuice
This has to be a personal favourite! Beetlejuice encompasses everything that is Tim Burton. With a memorable striped suit and green hair, Michael Keaton is Betelgeuse! Obnoxious and funny with great music, great actors and just an all-around great time. You have to pop this on your spooky watch list.
10. The Umbrella Academy
I'm not even going to try and explain the plot for this one, just know that it's brilliant. It focuses on a disbanded group of superheroes who reunite after their adoptive father dies. Based on comic books created and written by Gerard Way (yes of My Chemical Romance). This series is full of every emotion possible, along with an amazing cast, music and visual style. You will be an Umbrella Academy mega fan before you know it.
