Ten Mother's Day Lockdown Activities and Gift Ideas
Here's a crazy fact, Mother’s Day 2020 was the day before the first UK lockdown started! In the blink of an eye - which also sort of feels like a lifetime - it's that time of year once again. Here in the UK, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday 14th March. Although the end is in sight (bring on June 2021), we'll definitely still be in lockdown for Mother's Day this year.
With the distance between us, it's is more important than ever to make our mums feel extra special. We won't let the small matter of a ban on households mixing and all the restaurants being closed stop us! It’s time to think outside the box and get creative for Mother’s Day 2021.
1. Have a brunch date
If you're lucky enough to live to be in the same household as your mum this Mother's day why not start the day with a tasty brunch. Whip out the apron and rustle up a delicious breakfast for your favourite lady.
If you're in separate households this year you could facetime your mum, both put the kettle on and have a virtual coffee date! Lockdown is the ultimate excuse for extra slow sunday mornings, so brew up your morning and face time your mum from bed, if you can't do it in lockdown when can you!
2. Flowers!
The absolute go-to on Mother's Day, a beautiful bunch of flowers! Luckily for us, there is an endless list of places where you can order bouquets online.
A great way to support small businesses where ever you are in the world, have a look at your local florist's Instagram or website to see if they're delivering through the lockdown. If you're here in Liverpool, the wonderful Mary Mary Floral Design is now open for Mother's Day preorder!
3. Send a care package
Make your mum a little hamper full of things to spoil her. Great things to put in care package include her favourite chocolates, a new book, bubble bath, a lovely hand cream or a scented candle. Make it extra personal by including something tailored to her favourite hobbies.
Arrange everything beautifully in a little box and surprise your Mum on Mother's Day. If you're in different households you could drop it on the doorstep or pop it in the post.
4. Have a long phone call
This just happens to be one of the nicest things you can do and it doesn't cost a penny! Set a couple of hours aside and have a gold old catch up with your Mum. Especially for those who can't see each other face to face right now, this will definitely cheer you both up.
5. Buy a voucher for an activity to do together
Is there an activity you and your mum love doing together? Or perhaps something you've always fancied trying? Buy a voucher for a fun activity, be it a ceramics class, a spa day or a gift card for your favourite restaurant. Vouchers are a great option as you can buy them now and redeem them when the lockdown is lifted. This thoughtful gift will give you both something to look forward to!
6. Write a thoughtful card
Here at Utility, we LOVE greetings cards. From cute cards, funny cards, sentimental cards and everything in between, we've got you covered. Get your mum a card that'll bring a smile to her face and write a thoughtful message inside, tell her all the reasons why she's the best!

7. Make a photo book
Put together a photo book full of family photos from over the years. Try a mixture of photos from when you were small and more recent ones. Print some of the pictures from your phone using an online service, try printing them out in a polaroid style for extra nostalgia points! If you're feeling creative you could take the scrapbook route and also include small souvenirs from holidays or little notes and poems.
We promise you'll have loads of fun looking through all your old photos and your mum will love this thoughtful gift. This super personalised gift is easily popped in the post if you or your mum is in isolation.
8. Games Night
9. Cook Together
If you're living with (or in a bubble with) your mama how wonderful that'll you get to see her face to face this Mother's Day! But...it's still a Mother's Day in Lockdown and the traditional meal out is definitely off the cards. There is only one thing for it... its time get in the kitchen and rustle up a tasty meal together.
If you can't see your mum for the time being then why not try doing a virtual cook-a-long together? Lots of restaurants are doing 'meal kits' where you receive a book of prepared ingredients and finish off the dishes at home! You could both order the same one and cook them together over zoom.
10. Have a cosy movie night
Locked down with your mama and not sure what to do Mother's Day evening? Why not get the PJs on, get loads of blankets and cushions, pop your favourite film on and snuggle down for a cosy movie night. Get some popcorn and sweets in for the ultimate lockdown home cinema experience!
If you are apart from your Mum you could pick a film together and watch it at the same time from your different households. Text her throughout at all the happy/sad/funny/emotional moments!
Whatever you go for on this slightly unusual Mother's Day, we hope you have a lovely day and make your mum know just how special she is!
