In Conversation with Broadlands Pottery
From a studio in the rolling hills of rural Gloucestershire, where a family turned a dream into a business, Broadlands Pottery crafts the sweetest, ceramic decorations around.
We're super excited to have the ceramic creations of Broadlands Pottery here at Utility. We couldn't wait to have a chat with Cheryl, the artist who designs and creates these special gifts. We caught up with her and asked all about the lovely people and doggos behind Broadlands Pottery, their influences and their plans for the future.
1) We would love to know a little more about the amazing team behind Broadlands Pottery!
I have a fantastic family who have supported me all the way, my husband, 3 children and 3 very mischievous bassetts.
It is a real family affair here, with my sister Sharon who has worked with me since the business really took off and my Dad helps out with the glazing. Wendy joined the team a few years ago as a maker and recently my friend Sophie joined the team on the sales and customer service side. I have a great to have such a good team around me.
2) How did you first get into pottery and what made you decide to do it full time?
I have always enjoyed ceramics having taken it at A Level. I kept it up as a hobby and started the business back in 2012 from the shed in the bottom of my garden! I started selling at local markets and it progressed from there.
3) We love the personal touch each of your pieces have, do you have anything that influences you or inspires you?
It is our customers that inspire us, we get great feedback which is so encouraging and a reward in itself.
4) Where do you create your wonderful pieces, and how do you work best?
It is all made here in the workshop. We invested in an acrylic printer and it has made a real difference to the business as I can now produce my own stamps. I enjoy my own quiet time where I just get in the zone!
5) What are your plans for the future?
We love nothing more than producing bespoke pieces for our customers and this side of the business is really taking off. We want to continue to develop this area of the business.
6) Have you ever received and good advice that stuck with you or words to live by?
Be prepared to take risks.
7) Tell us about Eric?
Eric, naughty, checking, beautiful and loud! He is kept in check by his elder Fred, but is also now leading his nephew Murphy astray.
